Let's begin the process

Surveys consistently show that Alpiners want a public library.

Venues

Proponents are considering three possible venues:

  • Park at 100 South 600 East
  • Joint venture with Highland City (near their city hall southwest of Kohler’s)
  • Alpine Arts Council’s proposed Community Center on Main Street

Certification

Regardless of which site is selected, in order to qualify for state and federal grants,

  • The library must be certified by the Utah State Library Division
  • “Certification is based on the commitment of a city to spend public funds on staff, materials, and the construction, purchase, or lease of a library facility.” (Craig Neilson, Manager of Library Resources)

In other words, city buy-in and funding is essential. Private donations alone will not suffice.

Study and Public Hearings

At the next meeting of the City Council, we will ask a committee be appointed to study the options and make recommendations to the City Council.

I'm interested in joining forces with Highland City, meaning a larger collection would be available, and would reduce the funding-killing overhead. Is it too late? Is anyone at Alpine City considering this option?

Jim Tracy later told me that Scott's suggestion was significant in getting that area set aside. We just hope that the City Council as a whole will agree.

Please join us tomorrow night as we propose to the City Council to use the vacated Police Station as a library.

I'd appreciate it if everyone could come to the meeting and say something along the lines of, "I support using the police area for a library and I'll help by [insert something that you can do]."

Adam, can you still volunteer to work on the collection?

It would be great to have people say things like "I'll help remodel the space." "I'll donate books." "I'll help man a booth at the next Alpine Days." "I'd be glad to serve on the library board." "I'd be willing to help repaint." "I'd be glad to help with a fundraiser." etc. I know this is asking for a big commitment but I think that is the most persuasive way to make our case.

If you can't attend the meeting but would like to voice your support let me know. I'll take a thumb drive to the meeting. Record yourself voicing your support for the library and send it to, if it's not huge, or drop it off and I'll put it on the drive and ask them to play the recordings.

This is a great opportunity and we need to seize it.

Finally, is there anyone on this list that would like to help me refine my presentation?
